Srinagar: Five militants were killed as Army foiled two separate infiltration attempts in Baramulla and Kupwara districts in north Kashmir on Monday.
Three militants were killed in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district, while two militants were killed in a gunfight as Army foiled another infiltration bid in Baramulla district.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) in Rampur sector in Baramulla.
However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons, he said.
Col Kalia said forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, adding two militants were killed in the exchange of fire. “Two weapons were recovered from the encounter site,” he said.
Additional security forces were rushed to the area and a massive hunt was launched in the dense forest to nab the other militants.
Meanwhile, he said another infiltration bid was foiled when Army intercepted a group of militants tried to sneaking into this side from PoK in Balkhadiya post in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara in the wee hours under the cover of darkness.
Col Kalia said a militant was killed in the initial exchange of fire, adding a massive search operation was launched to sanitize the area.
He said contact was again established with a militant, who was killed in an encounter with troops. “Two weapons were recovered from the militants,” he said, adding the operation is still going on in the thick forest area in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara.
Recently Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the forward areas in Kupwara and reviewed the security situation on the LoC.
She was informed about the infiltration attempts being made by trained militants waiting at launch pads near the LoC to sneak into this side before the higher reaches are closed due to heavy snowfall.
However, she was informed about the measures taken to foil any infiltration attempt by militants from PaK.
