Barring Jamia masjid, Friday prayers held in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 26 : Barring historic Jamia Masjid, Friday prayers were held in all mosques and shrines across Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a strike and asked people to hold demonstrations after prayers on Friday afternoon.

No Friday prayers were allowed in the Jamia Masjid in down town Srinagar, where large number of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed to prevent any assembly of devotees.

A police spokesperson told UNI that there were no restrictions in any part of the city.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as all the gates of Jamia Masjid, where chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq is addressing congregation every Friday, were locked by authorities.
Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest on Thursday evening.
