Jammu, Jan 31 : Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday said that “Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Castes Act 1989” is not applicable in the state.

“Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Castes Act 1989” being a Central Act is not applicable to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Minister In-charge Social Welfare said in a written reply to the question raised by MLA Devendra Kumar Manyal.

The Government further replied, “the State of Jammu and Kashmir is reputed for its excellent track record of harmony between various communities across the religious and caste divide.

“There appears to be no need to bring in such legislation when there are enough safeguards in existing laws like “Civil Rights Act 1995″ and other penal provisions to deal with the subject,” said the reply.
