Fraudster poses as Deputy Director, dupes dozens of girls; arrested

 

He used to assure jobs to victims in lieu of money: Police

Baramulla: Baramulla police have arrested a person allegedly involved in swindling lakhs of rupees from young girls by fraudulently setting up knitting centers across north Kashmir.

The arrested person has been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of Tulmulla Ganderbal. An FIR no. 9 of 2017 under sections 419, 420 and 471 stands registered against him in police station Sheeri.

The arrested person according to police has established scores of knitting centers across north Kashmir by posing either as Deputy Director Handicrafts or official of Social Welfare Department.

The matter came to light after a resident of Kichama in Narwaw area of Baramulla district lodged a complaint in police station Sheeri stating that a person claiming to be official of a government department has set up a knitting centre at his residence.

He further stated in his complaint that the fraudulent person has besides his four daughters duped scores of girls in the area by promising them government job at the end of the course and benefits of various government-run schemes.

Acting on the complaint, police under the supervision of SHO Faisal Khan conducted a raid at Adoora where another knitting centre was set up by the accused and arrested him on the spot.

Among the seized documents from the arrested person include several identity cards, depicting him as official of government department, forms of various departments and photographs of scores of girls.

According to police, the arrested person has swindled huge money from the girls by promising them job and benefits of state and central government run schemes.

“We have seized several photographs of girls from the arrested person. He was charging each girl Rs 1000 and in turn assuring them benefit of Rs 75000 at the time of their marriage under some government scheme,” said a police official at police station Sheeri.

According to police, the arrested person was also planning to take some of the girls on tour outside the state and police is trying to ascertain the motive behind such tour.

According to reports, the arrested person has also taken huge money from some other persons assuring them government job. Reports also suggest that he has set up centres at various places across north Kashmir which include Boniyar, Uri, Rafiabad, Pattan and Tangmarg.

Soon after his arrest, scores of people from different areas of north Kashmir are reportedly lodging complaints at police station Sheeri that the arrested person has duped them of money worth lakhs of Rupees. The police have started comprehensive investigation into the matter.
