‘Calls for deafeat of communal forces’
Srinagar: The by-elections to the two parliamentary seats in the state are taking place at a time when Kashmir is in the throes of a grave crisis. Communal and divisive forces, which got a foothold in J&K with the installation of PDP-BJP Government, are raring to gather strength. The syncretic culture of Jammu & Kashmir is under severe strain. The communal forces out to destroy the secular fabric of Kashmir pose a serious challenge to the basic secular foundation of India.
The situation is reminiscent of the 1947 Partition when communal frenzy had engulfed both India and Pakistan. Kashmir was the only place at that time where the torch of peace, harmony and brotherhood was kept burning due to the exemplary statesmanship demonstrated by Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd Abdullah. Mahatma Gandhi had acknowledged this unique phenomenon by hailing Kashmir as the “only ray of hope” in the country.

The prevailing situation calls for a similar display of secular credentials by the people of Kashmir. Looking at the larger picture, JKANC has decided to support the National Conference and Congress Candidates in the forthcoming elections from Srinagar and Anantnag parliamentary constituencies. I sincerely hope they will be able to stem the rising communal tide in the state and bring about the difference that Jammu & Kashmir desperately needs at this juncture.
A rightful settlement of the Kashmir issue can no longer be brushed aside, especially in view of the sacrifices made by our four generations. Our party has all along espoused for such a settlement and will continue its struggle towards that goal.
I extend my best wishes to Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Mr. G.A. Mir the candidates of National Conference and Congress and call upon the people of Kashmir to support them whole-heartedly with a view to ensuring the defeat of communal forces.
