Sun gives brief appearance, but day chill continues in Kashmir

 

Srinagar: Sun briefly appeared from behind the clouds in the afternoon though chilly weather conditions due to ice cold winds and rain in the evenings from last two days in Kashmir valley.

However, there was further improvement in the night temperature due to overcast conditions in Kashmir.

Leh in Ladakh region was the only place which witnessed a dip in the night temperature as mercury plunged 3 degree from yesterday and settled at 3.3 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur at few places during the next 24 hours in Kashmir under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is action in the region.

He said 193.7 mm of rain was recorded during April in Kashmir valley, which is highest in this month in the last two decades.

Even though there was some improvement in night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in North Kashmir, it was still the coldest place in the region. Against 1 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature in the ski resort was 2.4 degree, a degree below normal.

After witnessing some improvement in the night temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar, people woke up to a chilly and damp morning due to overcast conditions. Against 6.8 degree recorded yesterday in Srinagar, the night temperature surged and settled at 9.7 degree, slightly below normal. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was 4 degree below normal in this summer capital.

He said sky will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 21 degrees and 6 degree, respectively.

The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to Kashmir Valley, Kupwara in North Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag also surged and settled at 9.4 degree, 7.4 degree and 8.3 degree, respectively.

The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, improved about 4 degree from yesterday and settled at 7.4 degree, 3 degree above normal.
