Union Home Secy discuss Kashmir situation with, Vohra, Mehbooba

Srinagar: Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi today discussed overall law and order situation in the Kashmir valley and Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) with Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Mr Mehrishi arrived here today to take stock of the overall security situation in the Kashmir valley, where protests by students besides militant activities had witnessed surge during the past few months.

Mr Mehrishi’s visit comes a day after a young Kashmiri Army officer was kidnapped and killed by militants in south Kashmir district of Shopian.

An official spokesman said Mr Mehrishi called on Mr Vohra at the Raj Bhavan here this afternoon.

The Governor and the Home Secretary held extensive discussions about issues relating to effective maintenance of law and order.

They also discussed matters relating to the security situation along the IB and LoC, increasing attempts at infiltration and growing incidence of terrorism in the Valley.

 

He said Union Home Secretary earlier called on Ms Mehbooba immediately after arriving here.

He said during the meeting Mr Mehrishi and Ms Mehbooba discussed the overall situation in the state.

He is likely to hold meeting with top civil, Army and police officials to review the security situation in the state, particularly recent militant attacks on police, security forces besides looting of banks in the valley.

Student unrest since April 15, when security forces allegedly entered Degree College Pulwma and thrashed students, including girls will also come up for discussion during the meeting.

Students at different places in the valley again boycotted their classes and clashed with security forces today, when Mr Mehrishi was present in the town.

This was the first meeting by Mr Mehrishi after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a number of high level meetings in New Delhi on Kashmir situation.
