Jammu gets lion’s share under MGNREGS funds

 

Of Rs 570 crores, Kashmir division including Lakdah gets only 198 crores

Srinagar: Notwithstanding ruling PDP-BJP Government’s promise of equitable and balanced development for all regions of the State, the funding under MGNREGS to Jammu region has been nearly double compared to Kashmir division.

According to official figures accessed by the GNS, government has accorded sanction to the release of Rs 570 crore for the financial year 2017-18 under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Of the funds, Jammu region has been provided 374 crores against 196 crores to Kashmir division including two districts of Ladakh—Kargil (Rs 12 crores) and Leh (Rs 6 crores).

Jammu district, the winter capital of the state has been allotted Rs 55 crores against meagre one crore to Srinagar, the summer capital of the state.

Of all the districts falling in Jammu division, Doda and Kishtwar districts have been allotted Rs 70 crores each followed by Rs 56 crores to Rajouri, Rs 37 crores to Poonch, Rs 30 crores to Reasi, Rs 20 to Udhampur, Rs 12 crores to Ramban and Rs 6 crores to Samba.

In Kashmir, Anantnag has got highest allotment with Rs 45 crores, followed by Rs 33 crores each to Kulgam and Kupwara, Rs 18 crores to Baramulla, Rs 13 crores to Ganderbal, Rs 12 croes to Budgam, Rs 10 crores to Pulwama, Rs 7 crores to Shopian and Rs 6 crores to Bandipora.

Not only funds, the sources said that staff, particularly non-permanent employees, from Jammu also get various allowances while their counterparts in Kashmir do not get them.

They said unnecessary hurdles are being created by some officers in releasing of payment to contractual staff as well as the labourers working under scheme.

They also alleged that Gram Rozgar Sevak, almost 90 percent of them are post graduates, are being “exploited from time and again” and their wages are not increased despite promise by the government functionaries from time to time. (GNS)
