Holy month of Ramadan commence in Kashmir, lacs join Taraweeh

SRINAGAR:  The Holy month of Ramadan commenced in the Kashmir valley from today and lakhs of people joined Taraweeh prayers last night despite tense situation following clashes during the day after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Sabzar Bhat, successor of Burhan Wani.

Despite clear instructions from the Chief Minister to administration to provide uninterrupted water, electricity and other essentials services to people, almost entire uptown was without water supply for the past two days.

However, majority business hubs in the city, including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital,  Budshah Chowk and Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) miss the Ramadan rush yesterday as the businessmen closed their establishments after the death of Sabzar.

Similar situation was witnessed in other areas of the city and districts, particularly in south Kashmir.

However, despite tense situation people joined special Taraweeh prayers last night in mosques, khankhas, Jamia Masjids and shrines across the valley, including Srinagar.

Despite people using electronic gadgets, “ Sahar Khan” whose job is to wake-up people so that they can have predawn meals (Sehree) was back on streets. He is reciting the verses of Holy Quran or beat drums waking up the faithful in the Holy fasting month of Ramadhan.

He is later being given cash and other articles after the Eid festival by the people though he is not asking or anything.

During the month muslims are not taking anything even water during the day time and join five time prayers in mosques and other religious places.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, opposition National Conference (NC) president and working president, separatist leaders have greeted people on Ramadhan.
