Night temp improves, day become chilly as WD arrives in Kashmir
Srinagar: As the Western Disturbance (WD) hit the region, the minimum temperature recorded considerable increase because of cloudy sky while day become chilly after the mercury witnessed considerable drop in the Kashmir valley, where wet weather is expected during the next 72 hours.
People in the Ladakh region continued to shiver after mercury recorded further drop, with Drass, second coldest place in the world after Siberia, coldest.
Light rain or snow may occur at scattered places in the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, a Met department spokesman told UNI Tuesday evening.
He said Fairly Widespread (FW) rain or snow would occur in the state during the subsequent 48 hours.
He said since the sky was cloudy after the arrival of WD, the minimum temperature witnessed considerable improvement in the valley, where mercury during the day dropped, resulting in further cold.
After witnessing coldest night at minus 0.7 degree, the minimum temperature recorded considerable improvement and settled at 2.9 degree, two notches above normal in summer capital, Srinagar, he said adding the temperature witnessed improvement due to cloudy sky.
However, due to cloudy sky and chilly winds, the day temperature dropped and settled at 11 degree, five notches below normal, which was more than seven degree more than recorded yesterday when the sky was clear.
Spokesman said there could be rain or snow and the minimum and maximum temperatures would be around 17 degree and minus 2 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar.
Gulmarg, world famous ski resorts still waiting for snow, was coldest in the valley after the maximum temperature was recorded 6.4 degree, about four notches below normal. However, the minimum temperature there also recorded improvement.
Drass in Ladakh region was coldest after the minimum temperature was recorded about minus 8 degree while at Leh it was minus 6.3 degree and Kargil minus 5.2 degree, coldest so far this winter.
There could be light snow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 10 degree and zero degree respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh.
