Fresh snowfall in upper reaches, rain lashes plains in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 24 : The upper reaches, including the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, received fresh snowfall, while rains lashed this summer capital and other plains in Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, the night temperature witnessed major improvement and settled above the freezing point at majority of places in the valley, though day chill intensified due to wet weather.
A Met department Spokesperson told UNI that light snow or rain would occur at many places in the state during the next 48 hours, under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD).
Much to the delight of skiers and tourists, the ski slopes at the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh snowfall since early this morning.
‘It is snowing intermittently on Gulmarg slopes, which are already under several feet of snow. But, skiers, including foreigners, are out on snow-bound slopes,’ a hotelier told UNI over phone.
The night temperature at the ski resort improved over 2 degree from Friday and settled at minus 2 degrees, which is 5 degree above normal.
Meanwhile, it was raining at the world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 from here in south Kashmir, resulting in further improvement in the day temperature. Against minus 2.3 degree recorded on Friday, the night temperature at Pahalgam was 2.7 degree, which is 7 degree above normal.
However, the upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on the traditional yatra route, received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received moderate to heavy snowfall.
Another health resort of Sonmarg on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which was closed due to accumulation of snow, received rain since early this morning, resulting in chilly weather conditions. However Baltal, the base camp of Amarnath yatra from the shortest route, received fresh snowfall.
After witnessing pleasant weather for about four days, weather turned chilly in this summer capital, due to fresh rain since morning. But, the mercury during the night surged about 4 degree from Friday due to overcast conditions and settled at 5.5 degree, which is about 5 degree above normal.
Dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), also remained cut off from their respective district and tehsil headquarters, following closure of Sadhna top, Z-Gali and Phirkiyan due accumulation of snow. “It was snowing since early this morning in these areas,” officials said.
The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag improved and settled at 4.2 degree, 2.9 degree and 5.1 degree, respectively.
