PM Modi, Shiekh Hasina and Bengal CM to share dais here on May 25


Santiniketan, May 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time will preside a convocation at Visva-Bharati University on May 25, in which his Bangladesh counterpart Shiekh Hasina Wazed and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will also share the dais during the inauguration of Bangladesh Bhawan at the central university complex, official sources said today.
Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Sabujkholi Sen told reporters that the VB received a communication from the PMO saying Mr Modi will attend the convocation on May 25.
The PM is the chancellor of the VB.
The Indian external affairs ministry also informed VB that Bangladesh PM Shiekh Hasina Wazed will also visit Santiniketan on May 25 to unveil the Bangladesh Bhawan, a Dhaka funded project to treasure the Bangladesh related historic documents, especially during the war of independence and Indo-Bangla research work.
The VC said the West Bengal chief minister will also be present in the programmes as one of the top three guests during convocation and inauguration of Bangladesh Bhawan.
The VB has donated a two-bigha land in which Bangladesh Bhawan was built at a project cost Rs 25 crore.
West Bengal governor Kesharinath Tripathi will also attend the convocation as rector.
Mr Modi has become the Visva Bharati chancellor two years ago after his predecessor Manmohan Singh quit the post in 2016.
Matinee idol Amitabh Bachchan has been nominated by the VB for the prestigious Desikottama award. The other nominees are composer Gulzar, writers Amitav Ghosh and Suniti Kumar Pathak, painter Jogen Chowdhury, scientist Ashoke Sen and singer Dwijen Mukherjee. Visva-Bharati will
also announce the Gagan-Aban award and Rathindra Puraskar at the convocation.
The chancellor will confer the awards at the convocation.
