Srinagar, 3 Aug :Two militants killed in Sopore gunfight; Internet shut, schools closed

 

Two militants were killed and an army soldier and a policeman injured in a gunfight in Drusoo village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.

An official confirmed that two bodies of the militants were recovered from the site of the gunfight that began early Friday.

A soldier and the cop sustained injures in the fresh exchange of fire, GNS news agency quoted SSP Sopore Javaid Iqbal as having said.

He said that both the injured have been evacuated and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Earlier, the forces said that the exchange of fire had stopped at the gunfight site and that the searches were on to retrieve the bodies of the two militants believed to be trapped inside a residential house.

However, an official said that fresh exchange of fire took place around 9:15 am when the forces were carrying out a search operation.

SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal said a cordon-and-search operation was launched at Drusoo village following specific information about the presence of two militants inside a residential house.

As the searches were underway, the hiding militants opened fire upon the forces triggering off a gunfight, he said.

The gunfight continued intermittently till wee hours today, he said.

Sources said one of slain militants is believed to be a resident of Naseerabad of Sopore.

Mobile Internet service was suspended while all educational institutional were closed in the Sopore area.

There were reports of minor stone-pelting in Sopore town following which the market got closed.   (Agencies)
