Delhi court extends interim protection of P Chidambaram
New Delhi, Nov 01: Delhi’s Patiala Court on Thursday has extended interim protection of P Chidambaram ex-unioun minister and his son Karti Chidambaram from arrest till November 26 in an alleged Aircel Maxis money laundering case, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) and Directorate of Enforcement(ED).
The next hearing of the case is now on November 26.
The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday opposed in a Delhi court the anticipatory bail plea of P Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case and sought his custodial interrogation.
CBI Special Judge O P Saini after hearing the matter passed an order to extension of the interim protection from arrest to former Union Minister P Chidambaram.
In this matter CBI is Investigating how P Chidambaram, who was Union Finance Minister in 2006 granted a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to a Foreign Firm when only the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) was empowered to do it.
In this matter role of Chidambaram has come under the scanner of Investigating Agencies in the Rs 3500 crore Aircel Maxis deal and the INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore.
A charge sheet has been filed earlier in this case against Former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi Maran and others.
Investigating Agency had alleged that Chidambaram had granted an FIPB approval in March 2006 to Mauritius based Global Communication Services Holdings Ltd a subsidiary of Maxis.
Special CBI court after hearing the plea in this case passed an order of discharge in favour of Maran brothers and other accused named in the charge sheet of CBI.
The Court had said that the Investigating Agency had failed to produce any material against them to proceed in the trial.
In this matter a separate money laundering case in the Aircel-Maxis matter is investigating by the Directorate of Enforcement in which Chidambaram and Karti have been questioned.
The allegations levelled by the CBI and the ED have been denied by both Chidambaram and Karti.
Counsel for Directorate of Enforcement and CBI has submitted before the court that the Investigating Agencies is required time to file a detailed reply and then will argue on the application filed on behalf of Chidambaram.
The agency filed a supplementary charge sheet before the special judge, who will consider it on next date.
Chidambaram had filed the plea for protection from arrest in the ED case on May 30 this year after which he got relief from the court on various occasions (UNI)
