Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen militant killed in Handwara gunfight
Sopore: A Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen militant was killed in a brief shootout with government forces at a village in Handwara of the frontier Kupwara district.
According to reports, the gunfight broke out Thursday night when government forces signaled a private vehicle to stop at a checkpoint erected at Pohrupath, near Sagipora late evening. The militants travelling in car, reports said fired upon the naka party in a bid to escape from the spot.
In retaliatory fire, one militant was killed while his associate reportedly managed to flee.
Sources in police department confirmed that the body has been recovered along with one AK-47 and other ammunition like few grenades has also been recovered.
The slain militant has been identified as Naseer Ahmad Teli from Armapora here. He had joined Tehreek-ul- Mujahideen outfit last month.
Meanwhile, the Additional District Commissioner of Sopore, Ashiq Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that all the educational institutions will remain close in Sopore today.
“Restrictions will be imposed to maintain law and order situation in the town,” he said.
Meanwhile, the internet service has also been snapped down by the authorities after the killing of the militant.
