Traffic suspended on Srinagar-Leh national highway due to landslides

Srinagar, Sep 29 : Traffic remained suspended on Tuesday on the national highway, the only road connecting Union Territory(UT) of Ladakh region with Kashmir, due to landslides since Monday, a traffic police official said.

Due to landslides at Zojila, traffic on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was suspended on Tuesday evening, official told UNI.

He said the highway remained closed today also though Border Roads Organisation (BRO) , responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the road.

Road clearance operation was going on when the reports last came in, he said adding traffic will be resumed only after getting confirmation from BRO and traffic police officials posted at different places on the highway.

Meanwhile, large number of vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essential for Ladakh region are stranded on this side of the Zojila pass, including Sonamarg. Similarly Kashmir bound empty trucks and oil tankers have been stopped on other side of the pass.

Hectic efforts are going on to transport enough essential commodities to Ladakh, which remained cut off from the Kashmir valley during winter due to heavy snowfall.
