Weather to improve from Sunday; Says Director MeT

Srinagar: Plains in Kashmir received a fresh spell of rainfall while higher reaches received light snowfall on Friday. The meteorological department has predicted inclement weather to continue on Saturday, officials said.

Director Indian Meteorological Department Srinagar Centre, Sonam Lotus told Agencies that the wet spell will continue on Saturday.

“Higher reaches of Kashmir including Sonmarg, Zojila Drass axis will most likely receive heavy snowfall especially on Saturday. This will disrupt traffic on major highways at Zojila, Mugal road, etc,” he said.

Lotus said from Sunday onward, they are expecting an improvement in present weather conditions and there is no major snowfall expected till the 20th of this month.

As per Meteorological Department officials, ski-resort Gulmarg in Baramulla recorded fresh snowfall of 2-3 inches.

Peer ki Galli, Sonamarg, Sinton Top, Minimarg, Sadhna Top, Zojila Pass, and Drass also received light snowfall till late evening.

Summer capital Srinagar recorded a 3.0 mm of rainfall on Friday, Gulmarg 1.8 mm, Qazigund 1.4 mm, Kupwara 5.2 mm, and Pahalgam 0.5 mm.

Following the fresh rains and snowfall in higher reaches, historic Mughal road and Srinagar-Sonamarg highway were closed for traffic for a third consecutive day on Friday.

In wake of the weather forecast, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority has issued a high-level avalanche warning issued for higher reaches of Rajouri, Ramban, Kishtwar, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.

While a low-level warning has been issued for Poonch, Doda, Kistwar, Kulgam and Kargil districts.

“The people living in these avalanche-prone areas have been advised to take precautionary measures and not to venture out to avoid any danger,” it said.

As per traffic police advisory, in view of inclement weather prediction issued by the MeT department, there are chances of a blockade on the highway.

“People are advised to avoid the journey on Jammu-Srinagar highway. However, subject to fair weather and better road condition, light motor vehicles shall be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar on the highway,” it said.

Following the fresh rains and snowfall in higher reaches, historic Mughal road and Srinagar-Sonmarg highway remained blocked due to snow accumulation for the third consecutive day on Friday

“There will no traffic allowed on these roads on Saturday,” it said. (Agencies)
