Mostly Dry Weather Forecast for J&K

The weather across Jammu and Kashmir is expected to remain mostly dry today, with brief showers likely in a few southern and hilly districts during the early part of the day, according to the Kashmir Weather Forecaster.

Light rain may persist in isolated areas of Kishtwar, Doda, Anantnag, Ramban, Udhampur, and Kathua until afternoon, after which conditions are expected to turn dry across the Union Territory.

The overall weather trend suggests dry and stable conditions are likely to continue until October 20, with only isolated spells of light rainfall anticipated during the period. This comes as the region recovers from the recent spell of rain and snowfall that affected higher altitudes earlier this week.

In a significant indication of early winter, the minimum temperature at Zojila Pass dropped to minus 8.0°C. The pass recorded a total of six inches of snowfall, with five inches currently accumulated on the ground. Light winds at around 6 km/h were also reported.

Meanwhile, Sinthan Top is buried under 8–9 inches of snow, with Daksum also receiving a light cover of 1–2 inches. However, Kokernag remained snow-free, highlighting the localized nature of the recent weather system.

Weather experts noted that while such patterns are typical for early October, this year’s intensity at higher mountain passes is notably higher due to back-to-back western disturbances that swept through the region last week.

With a dry and calm phase ahead, weather conditions are considered favourable for travel and outdoor activities. However, authorities have advised caution on snow-covered mountain routes, especially along Zojila and Sinthan, where slippery surfaces may pose risks for commuters.
