High alert issued as intense weather grips J&K

The next 24 hours are expected to be critical for Jammu and Kashmir as a strong weather system is likely to bring very heavy rainfall and snowfall across the region, officials said.

According to weather forecasts, most parts of the Union Territory are likely to receive intense rain spells, accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms.

Higher reaches and key mountain passes are expected to witness heavy snowfall during this period, which may impact movement and connectivity in these areas.

Authorities have warned of a high risk of flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying areas due to intense rainfall over short durations.

There is also a possibility of landslides along vulnerable stretches, particularly the Ramban–Banihal sector, which could lead to temporary closure of the NH-44.

Officials have advised residents and travellers to remain cautious and follow advisories issued by the administration, as the situation is expected to remain volatile over the next 24 hours.
