Remotest villages of India in Kargil to get DC grid based electricity

KREDA AND GHE Partnered for Electrifying Villages in Lungnak

Shotopa/Kargil: Kargil Renewable Energy Development Agency (KREDA) has partnered with Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) to provide energy access to the remote mountain communities of Kargil & Zanskar region of Jammu and Kashmir.

The collaboration will help bring light to the most remote villages of India in Lungnak block of Zanskar Kargil. KREDA has been working on providing clean energy through Hydro Power and Solar to the villages of Kargil region and the partnership of KREDA has electrified places like the Phugtal Gompa and villages of Itchu, Lankerchey Brok, Bodkharbhu Phu and Stakchey Brok for the first time in Human History.

Zanskar region of Jammu and Kashmir is the remotest region in Ladakh with villages situated at an altitude of more than 12000 feet above the sea level. There are more than 20 villages in the area without access to grid based electricity.

Kacho Ahmed Khan, Project Director of KREDA said “We have made every possible effort to help these communities but there was no good technical solution available. GHE has come up with an innovative Solar Micro Grid solution using energy efficient LED lights that will change the electrification scenario of our region, and we hope to have 100% Electrification by 2018”.

GHE has been developing its own energy efficient devices such as LED Lights, DC LED TV’s, DC computing devices and USB charging hubs. “Energy efficiency is the key to provide energy access to the remote communities of India. Our innovation lies in using DC based Micro Grids and using energy efficient devices which allows for maximum impact with minimum investment” said Jaideep Bansal, Energy Access Leader of GHE.

LAHDC, Kargil, particularly honourable councillors of Zanskar and officers of District administration, Kargil are also supportive of this initiative of KREDA. This partnership is a good step for the local communities whose prayers will be finally answered, moving from darkness into light.
