LS Bye-Poll: CEO convenes All-Party Meeting, to submit report to ECI

 

NC-Cong want elections on time; PDP for postponement

Srinagar: Chief Electoral Officer, J&K Shantmanu today convened an all party meeting on the issue of holding bye-elections to 3-Anantnag Parliamentary constituency and to discuss issues related to bye-polls held in Srinagar including re-poll at various polling stations affected by violence. The meeting was attended by representatives of PDP, BJP, Congress, NC, various state parties and independents.

The CEO held threadbare discussions on the need for re-poll at various polling stations where polling was affected by violence. PDP’s Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra opined that re-poll can be held at such polling stations as may be deemed necessary for by the electoral authorities.

Meanwhile, representatives of National Conference Akbar Lone and Ali Mohammad Sagar, and Congress represented by Usman Majid and G N Monga objected to the re-poll in Srinagar.

Shantmanu solicited the views of all the political parties on demand of postponing the April 12bye-polls in Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency in view of the prevailing law and order situation.

PDP representative maintained that the party has already made the stand clear and in a press conference held this morning. He said PDP has unequivocally reiterated that bye-poll should be postponed in view of prevailing situation to safeguard human lives.

NC’s Akbar Lone and Congress representative Usman Majid and G N Monga called for holding bye-poll in Anantnag as per schedule on 12 April while Ali Mohammad Sagar asked the CEO to take into account relevant circumstances while arriving at a decision. Representatives of several other political parties also presented their views on the issue.

Earlier today the Chief Election Commissioner reviewed the situation in a meeting with CEO and the local administration through videoconference.

Chief Electoral Officer is submitting a detailed report to ECI this evening pursuant to proceedings of all party meeting based on which a decision is expected by tomorrow. (KNS)
