Srinagar: An army officer was killed by suspected militants on Wednesday Shopian district of South Kashmir.

Police said that the body of the Lieutenant rank officer was found with bullet wounds in Hermain area of Shopian after he was picked up by the gunmen. The slain army officer was identified as Ummer Fayaz Parry of Kulgam who was posted in Akhnoor.

Fayaz had gone to Shopian to attend the marriage function of a relative.

Meanwhile protests erupted at the time of his funeral as the Indian Army tried to bury the slain soldier with state honours.

Reports said that the protesters pelted stones at the army and policemen who were present at the funeral adding that the protesters were apparently miffed with the Indian Army trying to give the slain soldier a proper state burial.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of Lt. Umar. The Chief Minister said what was more painful to note is that the young officer had come home on vacation where he was attending the marriage of his cousin.

Mehbooba Mufti has conveyed her heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family of Lt. Umar and prayed for his eternal solace.

BJP leader Ram Madhav, who was the point person for the BJP-PDP alliance, said, “People understand that these militants are loyal to no one and they kill their own people in the most dastardly and brutal ways. This is an act of absolute cowardice and I condemn it. The perpetrators will be brought to the books.”

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley also condemned Fayaz’s killing and offered his condolence to his family.

Condoling the killing of Lt Fayaz by militants in Shopian of Kashmir, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said, “The entire nation shares the grief of Fayaz’s family, friends and colleagues. My heartfelt condolences.”

“His memory will never be forgotten. Those who tried to defeat what he stood for will themselves be defeated,” he said on twitter.

An army official in Srinagar said that they have received an input and are verifying the circumstances in which the officer was found dead. The security forces have launched search operations in the area to nab the militants. (PTK)
