People drink contaminated water in Manigam; filtration plant dysfunctional

Ganderbal: Residents of Manigam area are drinking water directly supplied from Gutlibagh canal despite of filtration plant in village, which is dysfunctional since months. The situation has left at the brink of outbreak of deadly disease. Only few mohallas of upper Mehripora in Manigam received spring water requirements while more than 70 percent of population received contaminated drinking water.
A joint delegation told Kashmir Age, that from past one month the area is facing immediate risk of health problems as the authorities are supplying contaminated water to the consumers through taps. The risk of water borne diseases have increased and our localities have witnessed the increased number of baneful cases,” they said.
Despite tall claims by the authorities, there is no arrangement of pure water supply in the village, we have been provided 24-hours water supply which is most dirty, mixed with mud and sand and is not fit for drinking, they added.
As per the locals, the filtration plant at Manigam village of Ganderbal is non-functional for months, due to which the villages that rely on it for water supply are getting contaminated water.
The people of the area are in deep anguish against the PHE department, which has failed to get the filtration plant functional.
The water which is being supplied is highly contaminated and unfit for human consumption, 80 percent village is presently getting direct water supply from a Gutlibagh power canal and PHE department is charging annually charges from them for filtered water.
“Although the Public Health Engineering Department spent over lacs on its construction, but the villages coming under the Manigam filtration plant are still getting contaminated water as the plant has not been made functional, locals accusing, the officials of PHE department of being indifferent towards the problems of villagers and demanded immediate restoration of clear drinking water.
They appealed PHE higher ups to personally intervene and mitigate their sufferings.
Despite repeated attempts, the Executive Engineer (PHE) didn’t pick up the phone calls for a comment.
