Two militants killed in brief shootout in Handwara: Police

Srinagar: Security forces today killed two militants in an encounter in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, an Army official said.

The security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Bhagatpura in Handwara area of the district based on a specific intelligence input about the presence of militants there.

The militants fired at the forces as they were conducting a search operation.

Security forces retaliated and in resulting encounter two militants were killed, said an Army official.

Two weapons have been recovered from the encounter site, he said, adding that the identity and the group affiliation of the slain militants are being ascertained.

The gunfight is over and the area is being sanitised, the official said. Meanwhile according a police press release says two LeT militants were killed in a brief encounter in Warpora area of Handwara.

Acting on a specific information regarding the presence of militants in Warpora area of Handwara, Handwara police along with 21 RR launched a search operation. During the search operation, militants present in the area fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated, ensuing an encounter.

Two militants affiliated with LeT were killed in this brief encounter. The identity of both the militants is being ascertained.

Two AK 47 rifles, 02 Pistols, 04 AK Magazines, 02 Pistol Magazines, 02 UBGL Grenades and some more articles including maps and some cash were recovered from the encounter site.
