Mirwaiz put under house arrest, no relief for Geelani
Srinagar: Chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was put under house arrest to prevent him from attending a seminar organized at amalgam headquarter today.
Meanwhile, there was no relief for chairman of hardline HC Syed Ali Shah Geelani who was taken to hospital for medical check up by police and later again put under house arrest today.
A large number of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside the Nigeen house of Mirwaiz who was has been put under house arrest today, Media Advisor to HC Advocate Shahidul Islam told UNI.
I was also put under house arrest since this morning, he said adding Mirwaiz was to attend seminar organized titled “Resolution of Kashmir Issue -Prelude to Peace, Guarantee to Stability” at Rajbagh headquarter of the HC today.
However, he said seminar was going on and senior separatist leaders, including former chairman of the amalgam Prof Abdul Gani Bhat have reached the venue.
Mr Geelani remained under house arrest since May last year when he returned from New Delhi, a spokesman of the HC Aiyaz Akbar said.
He said Mr Geelani was yesterday prevented from visiting to hospital for medical check by the security forces deployed outside his Hyderpora residence.
However, today police took Mr Geelani to SMHS hospital under heavy security in a police vehicle.
Mr Geelani was brought back to his home where large number of security forces and state police personnel are already deployed to prevent him from moving out, he said.
He said during the past one year Mr Geelani was arrested when he tried to step out of his house and later released same evening a number of times.
However, the amalgam chairman was not even allowed to offer Friday or Eid prayers in mosque during the period.
