Students clash with police in Srinagar, Palhallan

Srinagar: Students in Srinagar and Palhallan areas of Valley today staged pro-freedom protests and clashed with police.

According to reports, the students of SP Higher Secondary School, Gandhi College and MP Higher Secondary School once again boycotted classes and held pro-azadi protests. The students at SP School tried to come out on the MA Road but were pushed back by police. The students pelted stones on police, sparking off clashes. During the clashes, many students were arrested, witnesses said.

Scores of students of Gandhi College and MP School in Baba Demb area of Old City tried to take out a rally and staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests. However they were intercepted by police, resulting in standoff between the two sides. Police used teargas to disperse the students. Many students were detained by police during clashes.

Students of Government Higher Secondary School, Palhalan Pattan clashed with forces on Monday during a protest march, sources said.

Local sources said the students started marching amidst pro-freedom and anti-India slogans however they were intercepted by government forces triggering clashes.

They added that forces resorted to tear smoke shelling against stone pelting students creating panic in the area.

Student protests have become common in Kashmir since April 17 after at least 60 college students were injured in force’s action in south Kashmir’s Pulwama on April 15. (Within puts from GNS)
