Police distribute helmets among bikers at Bhaderwah
BHADERWAH: After running drives after drives and advertising campaigns, and being politely harsh on those driving two wheelers without helmet, this is probably the last thing Jammu and Kashmir Police could do to stop bikers’ accidental death. And this is exactly what Police police is doing when at least 50 students of Govt Degree College Bhaderwah and some citizens were provided free helmets on Saturday as the Jammu and Kashmir police launched helmet week. Over 50 students and some people assembled at Community Hall Bhaderwah from 10 am in hopes of getting a free helmet and got it on first-come, first-serve basis.SSP Doda Mohd Shabir Khatana along with ASP Bhaderwah Shezad Salria , SDPO Berijesh Sharma and SHO Jatinder Sambyal inaugurated the programme, said, “Law is the same for all, be it the common man or a police officer. It is the duty of everybody to follow rules. People especially youth should wear helmets and encourage others to wear it as well.On the occasion, SSP Doda also directed all police officers to assure that policemen also follow traffic rules and wear helmets or seatbelts. Talking about the Helmet Week in Bhaderwah and other parts of the Doda district , he said that any drive can be successful only if it has public participation.”Despite daily news about road accidents people do not seem to understand the necessity of wearing seatbelts or helmets. SSP Doda stressed upon the bikers to act as ambassadors of Police department to spread the message of safe driving by way of wearing crash helmets.Police is making citizens aware about traffic rules,” he said.He also directed the police officers to implement the road rules strictly . The youth among whom helmets were distributed also pledged that they will not only follow traffic rules themselves but will also spread awareness among others as well. Later, the students and the commuters after wearing the helmets took out a rally for awareness among general public which after passing through various markets of Bhaderwah town culminated again at community hall Bhaderwah .The rally was also aimed to motivate most of those school-going adolescents and teens and their family members, who acquired a habit of stepping out on their bikes without helmets. The Police will keep records of those attending rally and getting helmets , so that the one among them breaking traffic rules could be treated more harshly.
