Mirwaiz put under house arrest in Srinagar
SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Maulvi Umar Farooq, who was detained after he tried to take out a march towards Khawaja Bazar martyrs graveyard in the down town, had been released after about an hour and placed under house arrest.
Meanwhile, curfew like restrictions imposed in Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and Down Town Srinagar had been extended to the old city and civil lines as precautionary measure to prevent violence today.
Separatists had called for a general strike on the 86th death anniversary of 22 martyrs killed during Dogra rule outside the Central Jail, Srinagar in 1931.
A spokesperson for the Hurriyat told that Mirwaiz, who was yesterday placed under house arrest, defied restrictions and stepped out of his residence to go to the Khawaja Bazar martyrs graveyard on the death anniversary of the martyrs.
But, he said Mirwaiz was not allowed to move ahead, adding he was taken into custody and lodged in police station Nigeen. (UNI)
