Srinagar: A picture showing inscription of “Afzal Guru Squad (AGS), Afzal Gura Ka Intiqam (avenge for Afzal Guru” on pillar of a building, purportedly written with blood by one of the three militants killed in gunfight with government forces after they stormed District Police Lines (DPL) Pulwama on Saturday, has gone viral.
ASG, probable stands for Afzal Guru Squad and the inscription can be seen on the pillar of a damaged building where militants were killed after a protracted gunfight which claimed eleven lives, including four each from police department and paramilitary CRPF.
The AGS, reportedly a group of Jaish-e-Mohammed militant outfit, first came to fore when they left behind posters after storming an artillery camp near the headquarters of the army’s XVI Corps in Nagrota in December last year, proclaiming their action was intended to avenge Afzal Guru, a native of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, who was hanged secretly in Tihar Jail in 2013 to “satisfy the collective consciousness of India.”
After Nagrota attack, a New Delhi-based newspaper, quoting intelligence sources, had reported that the Jaish-e-Muhammad calls its fidayeen units in Kashmir the Afzal Guru Squad.
There was no official confirmation whether or not the inscription has been written in blood by one of the slain militants. However, as reported already, the police have confirmed that the militant trio belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit.(GNS)
