12 dead in Mumbai building collapse
Mumbai, Aug 31 : At least 12 people were dead and over 30 others feared trapped after a century old five-storey residential building collapsed in the congested Bhendi Bazaar area of south Mumbai this morning, days after torrential rain pounded India’s financial capital.
The children, who studied in the nursery housed inside the building, escaped by a whisker, as the building collapsed around 0830 hrs an hour before their classes were to begin.
‘So far, 21 people have been rescued, including 15 men and two women, from under the debris along with four fire brigade officials.
Several are still feared trapped,’ Mumbai Fire brigade officials said.
Those declared dead at the nearby JJ Hospital include nine men and three women.
