Ragpicker Bilal Dar turned brand ambassador: PM Modi Praises him in Man ki Baat

 

Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praises Bilal Dar, an 18-year-old ragpicker who earned his living by picking up waste from the Wular Lake in Bandipora district of north Kashmir.

In Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi congratulated the SMC Srinagar for their initiative for picking him as Brand Ambassador. PM Appreciated Bilal and said he Could serve as an inspiration for others.

Meanwhile Bilal said that I am very much happy that PM Modi Appreciated me and Praising my Work.

It is Pertinent Mentioned here that Bilal Ahmad Dar alias Bila who is earned his living by collecting plastic Trash from the famous Wular lake in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

Later in a remarkable twist of fortune, Bilal was appointed as brand ambassador by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in the month of June this year.

For almost five years, Bilal, a resident of Laharwarpora of Bandipora district, has been removing plastic trash from the lake and selling it for around Rs 150-200 per day, which helps him support his mother Mughali and two sisters. Dar’s father Mohammad Ramzan Dar, a ragpicker on the Wular himself, died of cancer in 2003.

Bilal received no help neither from any section of society nor from administration.

Bilal’s remarkable story featured in a Documentary  ‘Saving the Savior – Story of Kid and Wular Lake,” by a noted Kashmir-based filmmaker maker Jalal-u-Din Baba. The Documentary depicts the life of Bilal.
