Youth ‘thrashed’ in Tihar jail hospitalised in Kashmir on court’s directions
Srinagar: Taking note of the ‘visible injury marks’ on the body of a youth, who was among 18 Kashmiris allegedly thrashed in Tihar jail in New Delhi, a local court in north Kashmir district of Baramulla on Tuesday directed police to get the victim treated at a hospital.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday expressed concern over the reports of alleged harassment and manhandling of some inmates from the State at Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
Official sources said that Ahtesham Ahmad, who was brought to Kashmir on Monday from New Delhi, was on Tuesday produced before a Sessions Judge in Sopore in connection with an old case against him.
However, after the injuries of the youth were brought to the notice of the court, the judge directed police to get the victim treated at a hospital.
Following the order, the youth was reportedly taken to Sub District Hospital Sopore.
Taking serious view of these reports, the Chief Minister spoke to Union Home Secretary, Rajiv Gauba and asked him to intervene in the matter.
Ahmad and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Syed Salahuddin son Syed Shahid Yousuf were among 18 Kashmiris, who were allegedly thrashed by jail staff at Tihar’s high-risk ward on November 21, said an inspection committee report formed by the Delhi High Court (HC).
The body was formed after one of the injured inmates handed over a blood-soaked vest to his counsel that he had used to wipe his wounds – as an evidence.
Based on the committee’s report, the HC on Monday formed another fact-finding three-member committee to further probe into the incident.
The HC also directed the jail authorities to get the victims treated and their medical examination done at AIIMS.
Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had called for a strike on Monday in protest against the alleged ill-treatment of Kashmiri detenues in jails within and outside the state.
