Srinagar: The first phase of the much-awaited Rambagh-Jehangir Chowk flyover is likely to be thrown open for traffic on December 31.
The project has missed two earlier deadlines but one part of it is now almost ready, the Director of Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (JKERA) told a local newspaper.
The flyover, constructed over a stretch of 1.5 km, is divided into an Alochi Bagh-Rambagh stretch (Phase 1), and Jahangir Chowk to Alochi Bagh (Phase 2). Phase I was set to be thrown open on March 2016, then it was deferred to June 2016, and now it is finally a few days from inauguration.
“We are opening Phase 1 of the flyover for vehicular movement on December 31 on a two-week trial basis. During this time, the concrete slabs, supporting piers, and the joints would be tested,” said the JKERA Director, Satish Razdan.
“The Phase 2 from Jahangir Chowk to Alochi Bagh will be completed by June 2018,” he said.
Razdan said that the duration of the trial period may vary from two weeks to one month, depending upon the vagaries of the weather.
The flyover will ease the traffic congestion on one of the busiest routes in the city. At one end the flyover will elevate the traffic at the Sericulture Department at Alochi Bagh and at the other end will come down at the Meteorological Centre Rambagh.
“The flyover is going to streamline the traffic, add aesthetics to the city map, and solve almost all the traffic-related issues,” Razdan said. “Earlier we missed two deadlines which led to some anger among the people.
Taking all that into consideration, we are burning the midnight oil to make the ends meet.”
