Need to think what kind of society is developing in nation: Prez on Kathua rape-murder

Jammu, Apr 18: In a reference to the Kathua rape-murder case, President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday said the nation should introspect on what kind of society it is developing.

“What kind of society are we developing? It is our responsibility to ensure such a thing does not happen to any girl or woman,” said the President while addressing the Sixth Convocation of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra town of Reasi district.
The rape of the eight-year-old nomad girl in Kathua,70 years into Independence, had shamed the nation, Mr Kovind added.
Earlier in the morning, the President, accompanied by First Lady Savita Kovind, arrived here on a two-day visit.
Over 880 scholars will receive their degrees and merit certificates at the convocation ceremony.
In the evening, a civic reception will also be held at Amar Mahal Lawns in Jammu for the President. Later, Governor N N Vohra will host a dinner in the President’s honour at the Raj Bhavan.
In her address at the convocation, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also touched on the crime against the eight-year-old victim in the rape and murder case.
Ms Mufti said, ‘How can someone do such a cruel thing to a small girl who is a manifestation of Mata Vaishno Devi? There is something wrong with the society.’
