One-way traffic resumes on Kashmir highway, Leh and Mughal road through

Srinagar, Apr 19 : One-way traffic was restored on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country after landslides were cleared while vehicular traffic was also allowed on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway after disruption in the morning due to slippery road condition following fresh snowfall.
Meanwhile, one-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic also continued on the 86-km-long historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region.
‘We allowed only one-way traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as the road at Peera in Ramban was still very narrow due to landslides,’ a traffic police official told UNI on Thursday.
Traffic on the highway was suspended on Wednesday due to landslides at Peera, he said, adding that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) immediately put into service sophisticated machines to clear the landslides. It took about six hours to clear the landslides, he said adding the road was still very narrow and only one vehicle could pass.
‘We are working to clear all the landslides so that both way traffic for LMV could be restored,’ he said.
All the vehicles, stranded on the highway, were allowed to move towards their respective destinations till late in the night yesterday.
Today both LMV and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar, he said, adding that no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction. Both way LMV traffic will be allowed once a green signal is received from BRO and traffic police personnel present at several places, particularly Ramban, he added.
Traffic on the national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir was disrupted in the morning due to slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall at Zojila, Zero point and Meenmarg.
‘However, as the weather improved and road become safe for journey, we allowed traffic on the highway. We are allowing traffic from Drass in Ladakh to Sonamarg in Kashmir from 0500 hrs till 1100 hrs,’ he said adding but due to slippery road condition, movement of vehicles was delayed. Now vehicles leave for Sonmarg and later traffic will be allowed from here, he added.
The Mughal road was also through for only one-way LMV traffic and today, vehicles will ply from Shopian to Rajouri and Poonch and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, he added.(UNI)
