RJD candidate wins Jokihat assembly seat huge margin

Araria, May 31  : RJD candidate Shahnabaz Alam on Thursday won Jokihat assembly seat by defeating his nearest rival JD (U) candidate Murshid Alam by a margin of more than 40,000 votes.
The RJD has wrested the seat from ruling JD (U).
The formal announcement of byelection result has yet to be made.
Mr Alam had successfully contested the byelection to Araria Lok Sabha constituency on RJD ticket after resigning from JD (U).
RJD has fielded Sarfaraz Alam`s younger brother Shahnabaz Alam in Jokihat assembly by poll. On the other hand, JD (U) has made Murshil Alam its candidate from Jokihat, a seat still considered stronghold of Mr Taslimuddin even after his death.
From Jokihat assembly seat, Mohammed Taslimuddin and his son and MP Sarfaraz Alam had won elections nine times.
The result of Jokihat assembly by election is seen as an interesting contest between RJD and JD (U), both vying for Muslim and Dalit votes.
Jokihat assembly seat is a part of Araria Lok Sabha constituency.
Votes were cast for Jokihat by election on May 28. Altogether nine candidates were in fray in the by election.
