Kairana, Noorpur bypolls in UP: BJP fares well despite loosing both seats
Lucknow, Jun 1 :Though opposition are on the upbeat mood after winning the Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly seats in the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, wresting both the seats from the ruling BJP, but still BJP has gained much in the vote politics in both the seats even after defeat.
Facing the joint opposition, BJP might have lost Kairana and Noorpur but still there had also been a counter polarisation in its favour.
Besides Kairana despite being seen as a communally hyper sensitive seat had traditionally not been a BJP seat. Party didn’t win it even in hey days of Ram temple agitation. It held it for a brief period in 1998, only to be won again by Hukum singh of BJP in 2014 only. The seat firmly remained with BSP and RLD since 1998 till 2014.
In 2014 amidst Modi wave BJP secured slightly more than 50 percent vote to defeat SP with 30, BSP with 14.33 and RLD with 3.81 percent vote and that is now joint opposition was almost equally matched with BJP with 47 percent vote.
In this Kairana bypolls, BJP candidate Mriganka Singh won from two assembly segments but lost in three remaining. The BJP candidate won from Shamli and Kairana assembly segments but lost from Thana Bhawan, all three in Shamli district and the two Nakur and Gangoh in Saharanpur district.
Nakur and Gangoh were the place where 68 booths went to repolls, which also turned the table against the BJP.
BJP state president Mahendra Nath Pandey said here on Friday that the party candidates fared well in the bypolls though results were not in the favour of the party.
” We will sit and draw strategy on our weakness so that in the coming 2019 polls it could be rectified,” he said.
Pandey said in Kairana, BJP won in two assembly segments but lost in three. Similarly in Noorpur assembly seat, the BJP candidate received 11,000 more votes than the 2017.
