SSDMA‘s strategies for South Lhonak Glacier expedition

Gangtok,June 4  :Keeping in view the Global Warming and changing pattern of climate, Sikkim State Disaster Management authority (SSDMA) is preparing to avert disasters.
Expedition strategies to South Lhonak, the most vulnerable lake among the 7500 in the Himalayas, were framed. The steps to be taken include, reiki, analysis, reporting and travel. This emerged in a meeting convened here yesterday.
It has been decided that a preliminary visit to South Lhonak will be undertaken after two weeks. The Glacier Lake had been rising earlier, according to scientists from the National Remote Sensing Centre,Hyderabad.
The experts, including SSDMA scientists, would conduct real situation analysis. Current situation has to be understood, they felt. The experts will try to find out the best mitigation process. According to sources, it is felt that vulnerability of South Lhonak should have lessened by now due to earlier initiatives.
It may be mentioned that the scientists had adopted ice siphoning process at a height of 7000 meters from the vulnerable lake spread over 100 hectares. The mitigation is also significant considering the people living downstream and protecting them and their property in case a glacial lake outburst floods the surrounding.
