DMK stages walk out from TN Assembly on Sterlite firing
Chennai, June 7 : The Sterlite firing incident, in which 13 people were killed on May 22/23, rocked the Tamil Nadu Assembly, with the Opposition DMK staging a walk out after it was denied permission to raise the issue, following which Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said any
matter that was subjudice could not be discussed in the House as per tradition.
During Zero Hour, leader of the Opposition and DMK Working President M K Stalin raised the issue, but his remarks were expunged by Speaker P Dhanapal as the matter was subjudice.
Protesting against this, Mr Stalin and other DMK members staged a walk out from the Assembly.
After the DMK walk out, Mr Palaniswami said issues which were subjudice could not be discussed in the House as per the tradition and asked the DMK to air its views on the Sterlite issue before the one member Inquiry Commission constituted by the government, which had already commenced its probe.
He said besides, a case was also pending in the court.
Stating that it was Assembly norms not to discuss any issue that was pending before the court, the Chief Minister referred to a similar remark made by DMK Deputy leader Duraimurugan when the DMK was in power.
‘Based on that, the issue cannot be discussed in the House and any thing on the issue the DMK
can approach the inquiry commission’, he added.
Later, talking to reporters after staging a walk out, Mr Stalin said shocking revelations have been emerging about the firing incident and termed it as a planned conspiracy.
Stating that sub-collector Prashanth has formed a nine-member committee on the eve of the 100th day protest by the Anti Sterlite Movement to maintain law and order, he claimed that the members
of that committee were not present on May 22, when the firing took place.
This clearly showed that the killing of 13 people in the firing was a pre-planned conspiracy and termed the inquiry commission formed by the government as an ‘eye wash’.
Mr Stalin said he had already informed Speaker P Dhanapal that he wanted to raise the issue in the House to demand a CBI probe into the incident.
‘The Speaker after getting the Chief Minister’s nod allowed me to speak on the issue’, he added.
‘But the Chief Minister refused to discuss the issue. Hence the DMK, in order to register its protest in a democratic way, staged a walk out from the Assembly’, Mr Stalin said, adding, the DMK might move the court on the issue.
