Budgam: Hundreds of vehicles came to standstill on Narbal-Gulmarag road at Kawoosa in Magam area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Saturday after people held protest against shortage of water.
They demanded that authorities must take measures to end the water shortage faced by locals for the past several years.
Hundreds of men and women, while blocking the main road for more than two hours, staged protests demonstrations and raised slogans against the Public Health Engineering department authorities.
They accused that the government has turned blind eye towards their plight.
“This protest is our last resort for an adequate water supply to our area. We want the government take note of the difficulties faced by us,” said Gulshan Bano, a protesting housewife.
Locals accuse the concerned department of failing to get a new water pipeline for the village. “We get water from tube wells and contaminated Sukhnag River, which is unfit for drinking as it contains high iron content. More than 30 villagers were infected last summer and one child died due to water-borne diseases,” said Shabir, a protester.
Protesters said that whenever there is a protest in the area against the water shortage, authorities try to undermine the issue by sending a water tanker.(Agencies)
