Energy saving calls of Tripura CM reduces power consumption by 11% in peak summer

Agartala, Jun 9 : To contribute towards climate change commitment of India for low carbon economy, BJP-IPFT government in Tripura has achieved energy efficiency by 11 per cent in May this year that reduced power consumption to 25.78 MW compared to May last year.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said that as advised by the Prime Minister, the new government in Tripura had announced to cut down the consumption of power by at least by 10 per cent during peak summer (May and June) to celebrate World Environment Day and several steps have been taken to prevent wastage.
“Our government made an appeal to the government employees, corporate offices and every consumer to switch off all the lights and fans and reduce the use of unnecessary electrical appliances for individual comfort as soon as we assumed offices. We target to make people understand that high consumption of power means generating double emission of green house gas (GHG), which affects our environment,” Deb said.
It might sounds ridiculous that a government discouraging the use of power and losing revenue but in case of Tripura the concept is different, Deb argued adding that the production cost of an unit of power is three times more than its environmental cost, the burden of which has been shifted on to future generation.
“My government did not want to earn revenue from consumption of power rather our target is to reduce the power bill at government level and encourage people to use natural light and air to keep the environment clean and green. If this trend continues from government sector we could able to save Rs 49 Cr annually. This is recognised as our contribution to global climate change mitigation initiative of India,” Deb stated.
He further pointed out that so far in last five months Tripura government changed abut 9.43 lakh 100 watt filament bulbs to 9 watt LED and out of which about 83,000 was made in last two months at village level under Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
According to report, the peak hour demand of power during most hot and humid days of summer in May was 244.39 MW last year but this year it has reduced to 217.82 MW after undertaking the measures to cut down the consumption of power by the new government.
