Landslides: 1 more body retrieved, toll rises to 13

Kozhikode, Jun 17  : With the recovery of one more body on Sunday, the toll in the landslides triggered by heavy rain at Kattippara Karincholamala near Thamarassery in this district has risen to 13.

Sources said the body Aasya (54), wife of Hassan was retrieved from under the debris this afternoon.

Twelve bodies were recovered by rescue and relief workers after the tragedy struck on June14.

Efforts by specialised National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and NGOs teams were on to locate one more missing person.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader M K Raghavan, MP today urged the state government to announce a special package for the next of kins of those killed and people suffered heavy losses in the landslides.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Mr Raghavan, representing Kozhikode in Lok Sabha, quoting preliminary reports said seven houses were destroyed completely and 25 partially at Kattippara as an impact of the calamity.

Besides, 50 houses were destroyed totally and 958 partially in other parts of the district in monsoon fury since June 12.

He also sought intervention of Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala on the issue.
