Thoppur in Madurai chosen for AIIMS, TN CM thank PM
Chennai, Jun 20 :The Centre has chosen Thoppur in Madurai district to set up a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for it.
In a Demi-Official letter to Mr Modi, he said he has directed Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar and Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan and other senior officials to provide all necessary support to the Centre so as to facilitate the early commencement of work.
He recalled that late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was very keen that an institution of the stature of AIIMS has to be established and made functional in Tamil Nadu, as it would substantially augment the facilities in the State for providing quality medical education, research and also ensure high-end tertiary level health care in the public sector to benefit the poor and the middle classes of the State.
‘Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu Government had recommended five locations which were fully eligible to have an AIIMS’, he said.
Mr Palaniswami said the Centre has chosen Thoppur at Madurai for establishing the prestigious AIIMS project in Tamil Nadu.
‘On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu and on my personal behalf, I thank you, Sir, for selecting the establishment of a new AIIMS at Thoppur in Madurai district’, Mr Palaniswami said.
He also thanked Mr Modi for having taken the project to the next stage by finalizing the location from among the five sites recommended by the State.
Earlier, talking to reporters he also thanked Mr Modi, the Union Health Minister and others for selecting Thoppur in Madurai to set up the AIIMS facility.
