New Delhi, Aug 2: Supreme Court on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of the alleged rape of minor girls in a shelter home run by an NGO in Bihar.
The Apex Court division bench, headed by Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur and also comprising Justice Deepak Gupta, issued notice to the Centre and Bihar government and sought a detailed reply in connection in the matter.
The Apex Court also restrained the media from telecasting images and videos of minor rape victims even in blurred and morphed form.
The top court also expressed it’s serious concern over the identity of child rape victims being revealed by a section of print and electronic media, and said,as to how the media has revealed their identities.
The court also appointed Supreme Court lawyer, Aparna Bhatt, as an Amicus Curiae (Friend of the Court) to assist it in the matter.
As many as 32 girls were allegedly sedated, tortured and sexually abused by the administration and visitors at a shelter home in Muzaffarpur in Bihar. The case came to light in a social audit report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
