Srinagar, Aug 27 : In a shocking instance of callousness and utter disregard for environment and health of these important water bodies, huge quantities of qurbani wastes including sheep skin, heads and intestines were dumped into the Dal and Nigeen lakes and their backwater channels including Rainawari and Nowpora channels, Nallah Amir Khan and Brari Nambal lagoon.
To meet the challenge LAWDA pressed into service considerable strength of men and machinery and till date has removed hundreds of kilograms of waste from the water bodied. The sanitation drive will continue till the waste is removed entirely.
The LAWDA has once again appealed the general public not to litter into the lake. It said no efforts would be enough to save these lakes for posterity without public participation.
