New Delhi: Expressing concern over the skyrocketing prices of petroleum products, senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram on Monday said relentless rise in prices of petrol and diesel has been built up by excessive taxes on these products.
Demanding that petrol and diesel be brought under GST immediately, he asserted that the Centre and states must act together and bring these products under GST.
In a series of tweets, Mr Chidambaram said, ‘Relentless rise in prices of petrol and diesel is not inevitable. Because, the price is built up by excessive taxes on petrol and diesel. If taxes are cut, prices will decline significantly.’

Centre blaming the states is a spurious argument. BJP forgets its boast that BJP is ruling 19 States. Centre and States must act together and bring petrol and diesel under GST,’he said in a tweet.
The petrol price touched Rs 79.15 per litre in Delhi after an increase by Rs 0.31 per litre and diesel rose to Rs 71.15 per litre (up by Rs 0.39 per litre) in Delhi on Monday.
