Editors Guild, Press Club of India condemn sentencing of two journos in Myanmar
New Delhi, Sep 4 : Condemning the sentencing of two Reuters journalists in Myanmar to seven years in prison after they were found guilty of having breached the official secrets act, the Editors Guild of India and the Press Club of India on Tuesday demanded their release from the jail at the earliest.
‘Editors Guild of India condemns a Myanmar court’s verdict that has sentenced two Reuters journalists to seven years in prison after pronouncing them guilty of having breached the country’s Official Secrets Act and demands their release from jail at the earliest,” the Guild said in a statement.
‘The Guild is opposed to the use of provisions under the Official Secrets Act in any country to throttle the voice of the media,’ the Guild said.
The Press Club of India also condemned the arrest of the journalists and demanded their release at the earliest.
The two Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were investigating the death of 10 Rohingya Muslims.
The UN has also condemned the arrest and demanded the unconditional release by the Myanmar government. UNI
