Train service suspended again in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 12:Train service was suspended again on Friday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike against the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara.
This is the third time train service was suspended in the valley for security reasons this week.
‘We have again suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley on Friday,’ a senior railway official told UNI.
Therefore, he said, no train will chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. Similarly, trains will also not run on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he said.
Train service was resumed only yesterday after remaining suspended on Wednesday in the valley, where separatists had called for a general strike in the areas where voting for second of the four-phased polls was held in 49 municipal wards. Train service was also suspended on Monday when first phase of municipal polls were held and resumed on Tuesday.
The Joint Resistance Leadership(JRL) has called a strike today against the militant killing.
Manan Wani, a Phd scholar of Aligrah Muslim University turned militant and his associate were killed by security forces in an encounter at Handwara in Kupwara yesterday. Manan has joined militancy in January this year.

The official said it is true that passengers are suffering due to suspension of train service. However, he said railway authorities are acting on the advice of state administration.
‘We cannot take decision to resume or suspend train service since safety and security of passengers besides railway officials and property was necessary as in the past, railway suffered huge losses during strikes and protests,’ the official added.
