Srinagar, Oct 22 : The army on Monday said that the slain scholar-turned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Manan Wani was emerging and had not emerged as a leader of militants to have any impact on the militancy in north Kashmir.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at Tangdhar in Kupwara district, GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen AK Bhatt said he feels people of north Kashmir are more peaceful than those in south Kashmir.
Responding to a question about the effect on militancy in north Kashmir following the killing of PhD turned scholar Manan Wani, the GoC said: “Manan Wani abi ik emerge hota howa leader tha, emerge nahi howa tha. (Manan Wani was an emerging leader and had not emerged).” Manan Wani was killed along with his associate at Shatgund Balla in Handwara, Kupwara on October 11.
“Aur mujay hamesha yeh kushi hai ki north Kashmir mai as compared to south Kashmir youth mai, loogo mai zyadaha shanti hai. (I’m always contented that compared to south Kashmir, youth and people of north Kashmir are more peaceful,” he added.
The GoC said there are attempts of infiltration going on while infiltrators are waiting on launching pads near the Line of Control.
“Present is the season of the infiltration as the snowfall is not much in the area and the militants in large numbers are waiting on the launching pads to sneak in,” he said, adding, “Our soldiers deployed at the LoC are keeping an eye and vigil every day to stop their attempt to infiltrate.” (GNS)
