Water scarcity triggers protest in north Kashmir’s Sopore

Sopore: Scores of people of Monday staged a protest here in this north Kashmir Township against the alleged failure of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department over the non-availability of clean drinking water.

Raising slogans against the PHE department, scores of the residents including men and women gathered on Sopore-Baramulla bypass road at Green town this morning and blocked the traffic movement on the road, witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

Protesters said that they are facing acute shortage of drinking water last one month and even when brought the matter number of times in to the notice of concerned authorities but nothing has been done to restore water supply in the area.

Meanwhile, a senior officer at PHE division Sopore admitted that the area was facing a water crisis issue.

“The department is working to provide water supply through Watlab line to the area. The higher authorities have approved this scheme for the area and started working on this scheme which will be started soon,” the officer said.

He said that currently water tanker supply has been started to the area so that they will not face inconvenience officer added.
